The other day I drove a 2023 Toyota Yaris Hybrid, cant recall what model but it wasn't a cross I know that much and while I was driving it the EV was constantly kicking in and taking over for most of the drive. I was very impressed and it was sitting at 80MPG. Up hill, down hill, it wated to use the battery.
I got my new Kona Hybrid 1.6 2024 yesterday and did the same journey today, well, I'm a bit let down to say the least. The battery would not come on while cruising unless it was perfectly flat or down hill, I couldn't kick it in to life by releasing the accelerator and putting my foot back on like I could on the Yaris and the battery sat at half full most of the time, It just seemed like I was driving a normal petrol car.
I am almost 100% sure that when I looked at the miles left in the bottom left hand corner when I left for work it said 370 (cannot be 100% sure but it was in that ball park) and my journey is 25 miles. I will be double checking on the journey home. Anyway, In my 2023 petrol Kona 1.0 MHEV driving at 58-60 most of the way that little "miles left in the tank" gauge would have dropped by about 15-20 at the most. In this new hybrid, I got to work and it said there was 342 left.... 342 from 370 on a 25 mile trip driving conservatively. 30 miles nearly, how do you work that out when my old MHEV would use 15-20 miles up?
I remember distinctly one journey I did in my old 20203 MHEV Kona, I had 20 miles left and where I was driving to was 20 miles away, I sat at 58 all the way home on a dual carriage way. By the time I got home, it still said I had 8 miles left...
Can anyone explain this, does the battery have to be run in or something, what is this poor performance on what is classed as a premium car all about? Is it just me, do I have a duff one? Please help!

Hi, I know exactly what you mean. I have had a 1.6l automatic Kona hybrid for 2weeks now and I love it, but I’m not getting anything like the mpg advertised online.
I drive in Eco, and drive very conservatively, mostly around town or short dual carriageway routes.

This trip (or whatever it is) 67.5mpg
This is all in Eco mode.
But this morning I stuck £30 of petrol in and noted that I had 308 miles after refuelling, lovely I thought. However, the trip itself was 25 miles. At the end of the trip I had 278 miles left. How is that economical? Even if I broke even which would be something, I should have 283 miles left.
I was driving at a smooth 58 all the way along the motorway part, then on the A road I was driving at 50 and then once I was in town, which is one downhill high street all the way from the end of the A road I was in EV mode.
When I look at that real time MPG bar when I'm in 6th gear doing 60 its just sat around the 30mpg line...when I was in my mild hybrid Kona 23 I could get that bar sitting at 50mpg most of the time that I was on a motorway, what gives here?
Can someone please explain how these cars work because its all lovely having 308 miles to just over half a tank but what's the point if it just guzzles it up?? I am obviously missing something.
Oh and on a side note, I noticed a few days ago that the gear changes in this car are awful. Going up a slight hill doing 40 and its hitting 2800, going slightly uphill on a motorway doing 60 or 70 it dropped down to god knows what gear and went up to 4000 revs!

So I had my Kona Hybrid for 1 year now. And I am experiencing the exact same problems. I have a drive this weekend with a Hyundai technician to try and understand the situation. Any sort of trip I do, I'm always using more fuel than the distance. A 70 mile trip at 60mpg will say I've used 100 miles of Fuel.
One thing that was mentioned to me was the fuel range in the bottom left corner is a total combination of your petrol and battery. So if you use the battery in the city and then that's why the range goes down. I don't quite believe it because if your engine charges the battery or your regenerated brakes charge it, then surely the fuel number would go back up?
I'm very disappointed with the car, I'm almost wondering if there's some breach of contract or false advertisement that I can go down because there is no way the car is as economical as they have advertised. The battery is very very weak, any sort of incline or bump in the road it switches back to the petrol.
One thing that is very very annoying is the constant dropping gears or not going up a gear and then your stuck driving a few miles with a loud engine at 3000 rpm. I've tried sport mode a few times because I end up manually switching gears using the paddles behind the steering wheel, but then your battery drains and the car won't go over 50mph. I also believe the battery kicks in when your going up hill to assist the engine, even tho some hills it should manage no bother. Even some hills my 2nd car a 2008 1.0L clio manages without dropping a gear. I think the camera/ sensor detects the hill infront of you and that decides if the car drops a gear.
Apologies for the long read but I have been stuck with these problems for nearly a year now. I've had the car serviced as well and they've done an initial check but nothing has come back. I also hate having to turn off the forward attention, lane safety and speed limit safety alarms every time I get in the car.

The milage left is a "guesstimate " judged on last spin so if you drove around town in mostly ev that guess will give more mpg but a motorway at high speed will give less if you understand, I had this talk with a hyundai mechanic and even in ev mode it will still drop the miles you drive bit strange but seems be the way otherwise if car didn't count the miles in ev the milage readings will be inaccurate , sorry hope you follow that
