Illumination of Wiper/Light stalks.

My car was in the garage yesterday, as the front passenger door will not open (Warranty Fault). The first time I drove the car after getting it back (in the dark), I noticed that the windscreen/light stays are not illuminated any more. I've ploughed through my hard copy of the manual, but there are no clues I'm afraid. Has anyone else had this experience?
